The Basque Country

Centred around the North Coastline of Spain, close to the french border and the Bay of Biscay. The Basque Country is a beautiful area with a wide variety of climbing areas and a unique independent culture based around the Basque Language and its people. Whether it is the Sea cliff of Ogono or some of the amazing inland venues like the Novice playground of San Fuasto, the Basque country has something for everyone.

Whilst single pitch sports climbing is the main theme of the climbing in the Basque Country, there are areas with some great multi-pitch sport and mixed trad routes. Dependent on your climbing ability and desired focus for the trip we have a tendency to use one of several locations for our accommodation to give us the best access to the venues that will suit your specific needs.

We run week course out of the follow destinations here:

  • Santander Area – A beautiful destination with some single and multi pitch sport crags, some sandstone bouldering and three great Via Ferrata. We can also access the Picos from here and some amazing surf beaches if you need a rest day.
  • Bilbao and Durango – Another series of single and multi pitch pitch sport climbing crags. We tend to be based around durango and can access areas in the south region of the Pamplona area fairly easily.
  • San Sebastian Area – A few great sport climbing venues are scattered across this region. The rock is more sandstone and one of the finest routes is a 7 pitch F5b that scales an alpine ridge from sea level.
  • Pamplona – One of spains greatest secrets with a world class novice sports venue of San Fuasto and Extauri with plenty of routes to go at, it is on the drier southern side of the northern mountains range.

Contact us to find out more about each destination.

Experience Required

Whilst some outdoor climbing experience is desirable, it is not totally necessary, as we can teach you all the skills you need. Ideally you will be climbing around f5 or above to get the best from this area.

Typical Day

We leave the accommodation and drive to an appropriate venue, where we focus on what you need to improve your climbing. Whether that is key safety skills or climbing technique or tactics.

Airport Details

We pick up from Bilbao Airport and drive to the accommodation.
